Jonny Depp
Have you been to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory yet? If not you really really need to go - I loved it but then I'm a hopeless case...
The film has already taken 7.9m in opening weekend in the UK but that's not huge - (to put in context Lord of the Rings (ep 1) took 65.2m UK gross. Titanic took 68m UK gross)
There seems to be differing critical opinion on Jonny Depp's performance of Willy Wonka. Here are a few.
From BBCI -
"But it's his Finding Neverland co-star Johnny Depp who steals the show as the oddball chocolatier. While the story is a little soft in the centre, his take on Willy Wonka is a richly layered treat. There's more than a touch of Wacko Jacko about his childlike demeanour - even down to the nervous giggle - but the genius of Depp's performance is that he manages to be creepy, sympathetic and hilarious all at once; "Papa?" he whimpers, when Charlie introduces him to his Grandpa Joe (David Kelly). Straight away it's clear that Wonka is a few fondants short of the whole box..."
From Roger Ebert (Chicago Sunday Times)
"Now this is strange. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" succeeds in spite of Johnny Depp's performance, which should have been the high point of the movie. Depp, an actor of considerable gifts, has never been afraid to take a chance, but this time he takes the wrong one. His Willy Wonka is an enigma in an otherwise mostly delightful movie from Tim Burton, where the visual invention is a wonderment."
